The best baking trays in Australia
A good quality baking tray can make all the difference! Here are some options to consider when shopping for the best baking trays and sheets online.
Nonstick baking sheets & trays
If you're planning on using your baking tray for cookies or other delicate foods, we recommend a nonstick coating. If you’re looking for a high-quality nonstick baking tray, the Le Creuset baking trays are a great option. We also recommend commercial-grade baking trays from USA Pan that are renowned for their quality anodised baking trays that do not warp with age that are coated in their uniquely patented coating called Americoat, a silicone-based nonstick coating.
Non-lined baking trays
This tray type is usually made of metal, like aluminium or stainless steel, and may have a polished or textured surface. Since it has no non-stick coating, food may stick to the tray more easily than it would to a coated or lined tray. However, some bakers prefer to use non-lined baking trays because they can produce a better browning and caramelisation of the food. These baking trays are ideal for bread or croissants where you want the dough or batter to spread out.
Baking tray sizes available
If you're an avid baker, investing in a variety of baking tray sizes can come in handy for various recipes. It's very important to also check the maximum width of the opening or racks within your oven so that you can buy the right sized trays that will fit or be able to sit side by side when baking multiple things at once.
Large baking trays
- Most common sizes include 45x33cm or larger. Some larger commercial-grade baking sheets may be as big as 66 x 46cm
- Ideal for cooking larger quantities of food or bigger items such as roasts, whole chickens or large batches of cookies or pastries.
- Enable you to cook more food in one batch, saving time and energy
- Larger surface area and can allow for better airflow in the oven, promoting even cooking and browning.
- These are suited for larger, full-size ovens like those which have at least 90cm widths.
Small baking trays (aka quarter sheet pan)
- Most common sizes include 22x33cm, 25x38cm or smaller.
- Ideal for those with smaller ovens or limited countertop space—perfect for apartment or dorm living.
- Great for small-batch cooking or baking, such as a batch of six muffins or a dozen cookies.
- Cooks faster than larger baking trays as there is less surface area for heat to dissipate.
Baking tray shapes available
The design of your baking tray is important based on what you plan to bake. Baking trays come in various colours, sizes and shapes.
Round baking trays
Ideal for baking desserts, including cakes, pies, tarts, and quiches that require a circular shape.
Square baking trays
Great for baking cakes, brownies or bars. It's also worth considering whether you want a flat or lipped edge on your baking sheet or tray–lipped edges are great for preventing spills and drips.
Rectangular baking trays
The most common shape for baking trays—suitable for baking slices, cookies, and pastries.
Commercial baking trays
Commercial baking trays are typically larger, heavier, and more durable than home baking trays, and they are specifically designed to withstand high-volume use in commercial kitchens. These trays are used for baking large batches of food in a professional setting, including in restaurants, bakeries, and other food service establishments.
Finding the right baking tray material
Baking sheets and trays are available in a number of materials and finishes. Stainless steel baking trays are popular for those who want a durable, long-lasting tray. The shiny surface also allows for even heat distribution resulting in perfectly browned cookies or pastries. However, if you're looking for a nonstick baking tray, you'll want to avoid stainless steel, which can be challenging to clean.
Aluminium baking trays
The most common commercial baking trays in Australia, thanks to their excellent heat conductivity and durability. They're also lightweight and easy to clean, making them a popular choice for commercial kitchens.
Ceramic Baking Trays
If you're looking for eco-friendly options, consider using a ceramic baking tray or stoneware baking tray. They are made from natural materials that don't release harmful chemicals into your food's surface when heated at high temperatures.
Silicone baking trays
A great option if you're looking for a non-stick baking surface. Silicone baking trays are also easy to clean and don't require any special care.
Enamel baking trays
Light-weight and relatively easy to clean, enamel baking trays are a great option for baking as they tend to conduct heat well and release foods with minimal basting required.

Baking tray and sheet alternative options to consider when baking
Baking dish: generally made from ceramic or glass, baking dishes are perfect for baking a casserole, roasting veggies or making lasagne and tend to have deeper sides to accommodate more ingredients.
Cake pan: a specific type of baking pan that is ideal for baking cakes, springform pans are ideal for easy removal of fragile cakes from the pan where you can separate the cake from the pan with a clip that widens the rim.
Cookie sheet: also known as a baking sheet, typically a thin flat surface with no sides providing maximum air circulation and even baking for cookies.
Bread tins: typically rectangular and have high sides, designed for baking and maintaining the shape of your loaf of bread when it rises.
Swiss roll pan: typically features a shallow and rectangular shape designed for making Swiss rolls or jelly rolls. This allows for a thin and even layer to be baked and rolled into a spiral shape easily.
Muffin trays: provide a specific shape and size for baking muffins and cupcakes
Pizza stones: a flat stone surface or a surface with perforations that create a hot and even cooking surface to mimic the conditions of a brick oven, resulting in a crispy crust.
